PROF. DATUK DR. SYED OTHMAN ALHABSHI is the Deputy President Academic of INCEIF. He joined INCEIF as the Professor of Islamic Economics & Econometrics and Head of Takaful Faculty in March 2007.
He holds a B.Ec (Hons) in Statistics from University of Malaya, M.S. (Statistics) from University of Wisconsin, U.S.A. and Ph.D.in Econometrics from University of Birmingham, U.K. Since 1969, he has served in various academic capacities in four public universities in the country, namely University of Malaya, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, International Islamic University Malaysia and Universiti Utara Malaysia. In October of 1997, he served as the Founding President and CEO of Universiti Tun Abdul Razak until March 2005, after serving Institute of Islamic Understanding Malaysia (IKIM) as the Deputy Director-General from 1992 to 1997.
He was a member of Etiqa Takaful Berhad Board (1995-2013), Maybank Islamic Board (2006-2014), Asia Unit Trust Board (1994-2012), among others. He is currently a member of the Board of Directors of Prima Prai Sdn Bhd.; Epen Bina Sdn Bhd., Universiti Teknikal MARA Sdn. Bhd and Institut Kefahaman Islam Malaysia (IKIM). He is a member of Dubai Center for Islamic Banking & Finance Advisory Board, IFSB Working Group – Guiding Principles for Retakaful (Islamic Reinsurance) Undertakings and International Advisory Committee for the 1st China-UAE Conference on Islamic Banking. He now sits on Shariah Advisory Committee for Labuan Reinsurance (L) Ltd.; Amanah Mutual Berhad (formerly known as Maybank Unit Trust Berhad), Singapore Unit Trusts Ltd. (SUT) and Prudential BSN Takaful Berhad. He is also a Shariah Advisor for Nomura Asset Management Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. and a Certified Shariah Individual by the Securities Commission of Malaysia. He has written and published numerous articles on various topics related to Islam, Economics, Banking, Takaful, Ethics and has written and edited a total of 12 books.
DATUK DR. MOHD DAUD BAKAR is the Founder and Executive Chairman of Amanie Group that deals with many facets of global Islamic finance from Shariah advisory to structured training to media and to Big Data Analytics. Amanie Advisors, one of the companies under the Group, has presence in ten major cities in the world. He currently sits as a Chairman of the Shariah Advisory Council at the Central Bank of Malaysia, the Securities Commission of Malaysia, the Labuan Financial Services Authority and the International Islamic Liquidity Management Corporation (IILM). He is also a Shariah board member of various financial institutions, including the National Bank of Oman (Oman), Noor Islamic Bank (Dubai), Amundi Asset Management (France), Morgan Stanley (Dubai), Bank of London and Middle East (London), BNP Paribas (Bahrain), Dow Jones Islamic Market Index (New York), First Gulf Bank (UAE), amongst many others.
Prior to this, he was the Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the International Islamic University Malaysia. He received his first degree in Shariah from University of Kuwait in 1988 and obtained his PhD from University of St. Andrews, United Kingdom in 1993. In 2002, he completed his external Bachelor of Jurisprudence at University of Malaya. He has published a number of articles in various academic journals and has made many presentations in various conferences both local and overseas.
On the recognition side, Datuk Dr. Daud has been honoured with “The Asset Triple A Industry Leadership Award” at The Asset Triple A Islamic Finance Award 2014 and “Shariah Adviser Award” at The Asset Triple A Islamic Finance Award 2016 for the Best Securitisation Sukuk- Purple Boulevard 450 million ringgit asset-backed ijara sukuk by The Asset Magazine. He is also being named as the “Most Outstanding Individual”, awarded by His Majesty, the King of Malaysia, in conjunction with the national-level Prophet Muhammad’s birthday 2014. The recent recognition is the “Award of Excellence for Outstanding Contribution for Shariah Leadership & Advisory” at London Sukuk Summit Awards, May 2016.
Under Datuk Dr. Daud leadership, Amanie Advisors has received an award of “Islamic Economy Knowledge Infrastructure”, at the Global Islamic Economy Summit 2015, by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, Oct 2015.
On the publication side, Datuk Dr Daud has just published his first master piece book entitled “Shariah Minds in Islamic Finance: An Inside Story of A Shariah Scholar”. Datuk is currently the 3rd Professorial Chairholder in Islamic Banking and Finance of Tun Ismail Foundation (YTI-PNB) by Islamic Science University of Malaysia (USIM) and also sits as a Board Director to Sime Darby Berhad.
PROFESSOR DR. ENGKU RABIAH ADAWIAH ENGKU ALI is currently a Professor at IIUM Institute of Islamic Banking and Finance (IIiBF), International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). She obtained her LLB (first class honours) and LLB (Shari’ah) (first class honours) from IIUM. Shortly thereafter, she successfully completed her Masters of Comparative Laws (MCL) from the same university. In 1998, she was conferred with PhD in law from the University of Aberdeen, United Kingdom.
She used to teach both Shari’ah and civil law; particularly on the subjects of company law, Islamic banking and finance, and Islamic capital market at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. She teaches Islamic capital market, Transactions in Islamic Banking and Finance, Takaful and Retakaful and Contemporary Issues in Islamic Finance for post-graduate students at IIiBF. Her research interest is in Islamic capital market, Islamic banking and finance, Islamic insurance or takaful, Islamic law of transaction, company law and securities regulation. Her publications include books, articles in local and international journals and periodicals; and chapters in books and proceedings. She has presented in various conferences, seminars, workshops and in-house trainings on Islamic Banking, Finance and Capital Market.
She had also served as a member of Shari’ah Committee to a number of financial institutions in the past. Currently, she is a member of the Syariah Advisory Council of Bank Negara Malaysia (Central Bank of Malaysia), Malaysian Securities Commision and Labuan Financial Services Authority (Labuan FSA), and an independent Shari’ah Advisor for Islamic securities (sukuk) issuance, approved by and registered with the Malaysian Securities Commission. In addition, she is also a member of the Shari`ah Board of Amanah Ikhtiar Malaysia, the Shari`ah advisor for Danajamin (2009 – 2010), a member of the Board of Directors in the Malaysian Institute of Islamic Understanding and a member of the disciplinary committee for the Malaysian Bar Council. She is also a member of the Shari`ah Board to Khazanah in relation to two of its exchangeable sukuk that had been issued by Rafflesia Capital Ltd and Cherating Capital Ltd. She has been a Member of the Shariah Supervisory Council for Labuan Reinsurance (L) Ltd since June 2006.
